Battle of Gettysburg - Pickett's Charge

For 3 desperate days in the summer of 1863, Union and Confederate forces clashed in the small Pennsylvania farm town of Gettysburg. The turning point of the battle was the ill-fated advance known as Pickett's Charge, when 15,000 Confederate soldiers bravely advanced across a mile-long field straight into Union guns.

On the afternoon of the third day, Lee ordered an assault on the Union center at Cemetery Ridge. Led by George Pickett's division, the Confederate infantry advanced on Union forces in a line that stretched more than a mile wide. The charge was easily decimated by Unionartillery and musket fire. Though some troops managed to breach the Union defenses, they were unable to hold the position and were repulsed. More than 5,000 Confederate soldiers were killed in the ill-advised attack.
