Apollo 11 Commemorative Coin

One could say that the 20th century was a time of "upward expansion" in the United States. It began on December 17, 1903, when brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright launched the first successful flight of an airplane into the skies over Kitty Hawk, NC. In 1927, Charles Lindbergh made his historic solo journey across the Atlantic Ocean. The subsequent development of the jet airliner in the late 1940s led to the rise of commercial aviation and enabled Americans to fly quickly and comfortably from coast to coast.

Once we conquered the sky, we turned our attention to what seemed to be animpossible quest: space exploration. However, with the combination of American ingenuity and the courage of a few brave souls who were willing to risk their lives for the cause, it quickly became apparent that sending a craft beyond the earth's atmosphere was an achievable objective.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration was established in 1958 to "boldly expand frontiers inair and space." In 1961, President John F. Kennedy put forth an incredible challenge to land a man on the moon within the next 10 years. Eight years later - on July 20, 1969 - Apollo 11 Commander Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the lunar surface. His unforgettable words "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” ushered in a new era of exploration and achievement.
