$100,000 Woodrow Wilson Banknote Commemorative Coin

In 1934, the U.S. Treasury introduced a banknote with a face value that surpassed the lifetime earnings of the typical American worker. Printed from December 18, 1934, through January 9, 1935, theOne Hundred Thousand-Dollar Gold Certificate was not created as actual currency. It was a banknote issued to Federal Reserve Banks to be used in exchange for gold bullion held by the Treasury Department and was not circulated among the general public. Since they were used exclusively between government agencies, only 42,000 of these certificates were ever printed.

The certificate featured a portrait of Woodrow Wilson, 28th President of the U.S. and creator of the Federal Reserve System, on the obverse. Like all previous gold certificates, the reverse was printed in vibrant orange adorned with abstract scrollwork and intricate detail to thwart counterfeiters. Use of this and all other high-denomination bills was officially halted in 1969, by executive order of President Richard Nixon, to combat the use of cash in organized crime and other unlawful activities.Today, only three original certificates exist, and those are kept under tight security at select museums.
